Acting Exercise
Exploring
Subtext Once the scene is blocked, have the actresses run the general
blocking for the scene but speak their subtext instead of their lines. In
other
words, get them to speak what is in th heads of their characters. It may
be similar to the written lines or it may be very different. You may have
to do this a few times to get them to feel comfortable departing from
the written text. After you try this, run it again but give
the actresses the freedom to change the blocking according to the subtext.
Another helpful exploration would be to have them
improvise a few moments just before the scene
begins. You may be surprised with some creative and
exciting results.
