NOW WHAT?
MAIN POINT
Every one of us has experienced the
strangeness of coming to one of life's big turning points and feeling
profoundly disappointed with the results.
Graduation can be one of those times.
Somehow we've been led to believe the culmination of our early
years is at those cap-and-gown ceremonies.
All the preparation is over; now life is supposed to begin.
So when the day actually arrives, it sometimes has trouble living
up to all the expectations. You get the sneaking suspicion you've been
duped. That life doesn't
actually begin like it was supposed to.
This
script begs for the introduction of God to the equation: his prescription
for finding meaning in life, his providence and protection, and how to
find his guidance.
CHARACTERIZATION
This graduate should not
come across as fearful. Although
she undoubtedly has some inner anxiety, she's a generally confident person
who believes she'll figure things out.
She just doesn't like the pace at which things are proceeding.
Play her slightly cynical, but not completely jaded or discouraged.
She's uncertain, but not depressed.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
1) Since this is a monologue
(as opposed to a soliloquy), the actor shouldn't be afraid to address the
audience directly with eyes and voice.
They need to experience the actor directly as opposed to
eavesdropping on the actor's private thoughts. Although the actor
shouldn't stand in one place the whole time, avoid excessive movement. Slow, thoughtful pacing will help. 2) Gender isn't crucial
here. You can easily convert
this character to a male graduate.

assurance, see Romans 8:38-39.

Besides the obvious theme of graduation, you can also use it to
address God's will, God's sovereignty, the future or even singleness.
